BALI National Award Winner 1996 - Land Renewal
Limmo Peninsula is a 4 acre conservation park created from disused railway sidings in the heart of London's docklands. Habitats produced include reed beds, flood meadows and wildflower areas, all accessed by boardwalks.
The works undertaken included:
Remodelling of ground levels including removal and replacement of 1,600 cubic metres of contaminated subsoil Construction of water channels using 2,000 cubic metres geotextile membrane and PVC liner Construction of over 1,000 linear metres of elm boarding to retain the vertical profiles of the water channels Construction of 8 sluice gates, 3 weirs and a water shoot Installation of 100 tons of cobbles Construction of an activity area with a water wheel, sluicegate and a floating island with built-in duck ramp Design and construction of a timber causeway Construction of paths and timber boardwalks to allow wheelchair access Planting of woodland, willow coppice and marsh planting areas Conservation of topsoil and wildflower seeding
