Environment

At The Landscape Group, we know that our activities will impact on our environment and that we have a responsibility to minimise the negative impacts and maximise the positive impacts.

The framework within which we manage our environmental impact is our Integrated Management System, certificated by our accreditation partner, NQA. This IMS includes:

  • Quality Management, accredited to BS EN ISO9001:2008
  • Environmental Management, accredited to BS EN ISO14001: 2004
  • Health and Safety Management, accredited to OHSAS 18001:2007

So, as a commitment to improving environmental practices, we are accredited to ISO14001: 2004.   Within this accreditation the Company assesses and manages all significant impacts as a result of its activities and annually sets aims, objectives and targets to further improve its performance.

Our Aims and Objectives are:

  • To minimise emissions caused through direct operating practices.
  • To minimise use of primary resources.
  • To optimise waste reduction by helping to identify and then design out waste, ensuring that our working practices are efficient and re-using surplus materials arising from our activities.
  • To explore the use of realistic alternative fuels, such as electric power and/or hybrid power sources.
  • To identify, source and use materials that are as socially and environmentally friendly as possible.
  • To minimise potable water consumption and maximise the effectiveness of irrigation.
  • To ensure that whilst undertaking our work we protect and where possible enhance biodiversity and local ecosystems.
  • To use the quietest and cleanest methods of operation wherever possible to minimise pollution.
  • To work with the communities closest to operations to provide training and employment; involve local people in our projects and services to help deliver best value.
  • To provide fair and open opportunities for local people and suppliers to contribute to The Landscape Group’s projects.

Our QHSE Manager, Simon Foley is

responsible for maintaining our ISO14001 accreditation. External audits will be conducted once every two years by The Landscape Group's audit partners NQA.   Internal audits are conducted on our term contracts twice per year by trained auditors, using our internal audit checklist for guidance.

We want to go further than simply complying with environmental legislation.  In 2010, The Landscape Group embarked upon an ambitious three-year strategy to revolutionise our environmental performance.   This strategy is now being implemented under the umbrella of the company’s Integrated Management System, and comprises two key initiatives:

1. Our Waste Management strategies – aiming for a step change in our approach to segregating, handling and processing waste.  This is particularly relevant to green waste.

2. Our Carbon Reduction Plan – measuring, minimising and mitigating our emissions.  We minimise emissions through the correct selection of vehicles and machinery, careful work programming and driver training.  We offer local mitigation schemes at our own cost to offset the annual emissions that we measure on each term contract.
