Municipal Square, Crewe - £1.5 million

Client: Crewe and Nantwich Borough Council
Landscape Architect: Gillespies
BALI Awards: National Award Winner 2007 - Best Use of Lighting

Background

The remodeling of Municipal Square formed the first stage of Crewe’s Town Centre redevelopment. The Square is perhaps the most significant area at the entrance to the town, and has been transformed into a dignified, memorable and modern new civic space.

Our Role

Works began with the full demolition of the square’s existing features such as walls, steps and raised planters; necessary to facilitate the provision of the new hard and soft landscaped areas.

The initial hard landscaping included excavation work and drainage installation, followed by the construction of new granite walls and steps.

In addition, the team installed 4,500 square metres of new York stone and granite paving, and created a series of new footpaths and highways in which new surfacing and traffic calming measures were installed.

The centrepiece of the new square was the relocation of a War Memorial from Market Square, which involved The Landscape Group carrying out specialist works to the stone and bronze to restore the statue to its former glory. The completion of the war memorial saw the supply and fixing of new plaques, inlaid stainless steel lettering and York stone cladding. In addition, the team constructed a bespoke concrete ellipse   containing etched letters in remembrance of those who gave their lives in both World Wars.

Soft landscaping featured tree and shrub planting together with turfing and mulching.

Accompanying ancillary works included the supply and fixing of street furniture and the implementation of an extensive

external lighting scheme, which included lighting to the square, adjacent streets and the front of the town hall building.

Following the practical completion of all hard and soft landscaping, The Landscape Group ensured all works were managed to a high standard through a one-year maintenance period.

In recognition of the team’s quality workmanship, Sarah Gibson of Landscape Architects, Gillespies, expressed  that “In our opinion the operation of the site and the works are well organised and all of the work is being carried out to a very high standard. We would have no hesitation in recommending The Landscape Group for this type of work.”
